History and Background

Four-leaf Clover Pattern
The four-leaf clover was created by Giuditta Brozzetti to frame other designs that were bigger or more important. At that time (1920/1930), flowers and foliage were some of the most popular decorative designs - Art Deco was at it's peak.

Uccellini (small birds) Pattern
Birds alternated with 8 petal rosettes are a recurring motif in the bas-reliefs of the Etruscan tombs. They indicated the passage from one world to another, that is, the continuity of life in the afterlife. The same significance remains the same in christian symbology: the birds represent life and the rosetta the soul. This decorative motif appears frequently in the "Tovaglia Perugine" (Perugian Tablecloths) which are base on the alter cloths of the 14th, 15th and 16th century. One interpretation of this design is the representation of some of the important episode of the life of Saint Francis: the rose recalled the thorny rosebush that dropped all of its thorns when the saint threw himself into it as an act of penitance, while the birds represented the doves that ate from his hands.
